The Model Health System (MHS) day case compartment has been updated in line with the latest British Association of Day Surgery (BADS) directory of procedures, supporting trusts and systems to monitor the delivery of some surgical procedures in the most efficient and clinically appropriate setting.
BADS’ directory includes recommended rates for the percentage of procedures completed in a day case or outpatient care setting. Now, for the first time, MHS users can view BADS outpatient procedures as well as day case activity, supporting the drive towards elective recovery by moving more suitable activity into an outpatient environment.
The updated metrics in the day case compartment can support the delivery of efficiency and productivity targets and can be used in conjunction with the GIRFT Right Procedure Right Place initiative, which looks to optimise theatre staffing resources for a specific group of elective procedures, carried out under local anaesthetic (Right Procedure), that can be safely and effectively delivered outside a theatre environment (Right Place).
Key changes
The new headline metric for the MHS day case compartment shows the combined rate of procedures delivered in an outpatient or day case setting as a proportion of all inpatient, day case and outpatient activity. This is a significant shift from the previous MHS content which allowed monitoring of admitted patient care only (inpatient and day case).
The new headline metric is not comparable to the previous headline metric, due to the inclusion of significant volumes of outpatient procedure activity. However, the MHS will include historic data for the new headline metric to facilitate time-series comparisons. Site level data has been added to the day case compartment for sites with material volumes of BADS activity.
The compartment also includes benchmarked metrics which allow for monitoring against the procedures in the BADS directory, such as:
- Performance against the recommended rates (at BADS procedure level)
- Conversion from day cases to overnight stays
- Conversion from planned overnight stays to a 0-day length of stay
- Opportunities associated with achieving target rates for day cases and outpatient procedures (at BADS procedure level)
