Day Case Surgery
The GIRFT programme is working with British Association of Day Surgery (BADS), and the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) to support NHS trusts to expand and increase day case surgery.
Day surgery brings recognised benefits for both patients and system-wide efficiencies related to patient quality and experience, reduced waiting times, release of valuable bed stock and significant financial implications. BADS exists as a multidisciplinary professional organisation to pioneer and promote day surgery development, set standards for day surgery and has developed national benchmarking for day surgery performance.
GIRFT, CPOC and BADS are providing resources to guide the development of day surgery services so that all patients benefit from the opportunities and clinical outcomes which high quality day surgery pathways offer.
The expansion of day surgery is being achieved through the development of clear guidelines and pathways aimed at improving quality.

Hosted by GIRFT with colleagues from BADS and CPOC, this webinar discussed the key actions in the updated National Day Surgery Delivery Pack and how this can be used to fully maximise the use of day surgery.
- Model Hospital: Day Case Surgery Metrics
The Model Health System is a data-driven improvement tool that enables NHS health systems and trusts to benchmark quality and productivity. By identifying opportunities for improvement, the Model Health System empowers NHS teams to continuously improve care for patients.
The Model Health System (MHS) day case compartment was updated in October 2024 in line with the latest British Association of Day Surgery (BADS) directory of procedures. For the first time, MHS users can view BADS outpatient procedures as well as day case activity, supporting the drive towards elective recovery by moving more suitable activity into an outpatient environment.
