GIRFT’s preoperative assessment network shortlisted for top Nursing Times award

GIRFT’s successful non-medical network for colleagues working to improve preoperative assessment (POA) has been shortlisted for a prestigious award in the 2024 Nursing Times Awards.

The POA network, established in 2022, was set up as part of GIRFT’s theatre productivity work, which supports providers and systems to maximise the effectiveness and throughput of their surgical theatres through improvements across the surgical elective pathway.

Aiming to enable peer-to-peer sharing of information and ideas, there are now more than 300 members of the community.

As well as hosting GIRFT best practice guidance and other resources, the network offers a very active forum where members can seek and/or offer peer support, discuss their challenges and share advice, examples and resources with one other. Regular monthly network meetings are also held.

The GIRFT POA network is nominated in ‘Theatre and Surgical Nursing’ category of the Nursing Times Awards, which are run annually to shine a light on the brightest talent in the profession and recognise those making nursing innovative, patient-focused and inclusive.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony at the Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane, London in October.

“I’m delighted that the preoperative assessment national network has been recognised for its role in bringing together colleagues to share their ideas and innovations. Pre-assessment teams everywhere are working exceptionally hard to ensure they offer the best possible service for patients. The network is so successful because it offers the opportunity to learn and share – and sometimes offload! - with like-minded people, and therefore moving forward and improving together.”
