Masterclass helps to understand and optimise use of GIRFT metrics on Model Health System

Model Health System and GIRFT webinar

More than 350 people took part in a masterclass webinar to learn more about understanding and navigating GIRFT metrics on the Model Health System (MHS).

Speakers from both organisations guided viewers from across the NHS in how to make the best use of GIRFT’s clinical and gateway metrics on the MHS portal and how trusts, systems and commissioners can use the site to improve services.

A recording of the masterclass is available here (you will need to log in to the Model Health System to view).

A summary of questions and answers from the webinar can be found here.

During the webinar, GIRFT clinical lead for spinal services, Mike Hutton, demonstrated how the metrics allow clinicians to benchmark performance against that of their peers or the national standard and to recognise opportunities for improvement, while GIRFT’s clinical and financial information lead, Maddy Connolly, explained the metrics available now and those in development.

GIRFT works in partnership with the Model Health System (formerly Model Hospital) team to share the programme’s metrics on the portal to provide valuable insight to helps trusts improve performance.

Thirteen of the GIRFT programme’s specialty workstreams now have a selection of metrics available to view: cardiothoracic, ENT, general surgery, gynaecology, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, oral & maxillofacial surgery, ophthalmology, paediatric ENT, paediatric surgery, spinal surgery, urology and vascular surgery.

Users are able to drill down into each specialty in more detail to understand where improvements can be made.

MHS can be accessed by anyone who works within NHS trusts, from board to ward, as well as arm’s length bodies. NHS staff can sign up for the Model Health System with their trust email address at model.nhs.uk to view data relating to the performance of their trust. Register or log in by clicking here.
