National clinical leads sought for new GIRFT Further Faster focus on Urgent and Emergency Care

GIRFT is looking for national clinical leads for a new GIRFT Further Faster Urgent and Emergency Care programme, as we expand our on-the-ground support to NHS trusts across England.

We are seeking experienced medical professionals with practical expertise in delivering and leading improvement and change within the UEC pathway, particularly in acute medicine, emergency medicine and geriatric medicine, but also in other relevant specialties.

The appointed clinician(s) will join the GIRFT Further Faster UEC programme – adopting the principles of our successful Further Faster work in bringing together hospital clinicians and operational teams to collectively go ‘further and faster’ in transforming patient pathways, and applying those principles to improving Urgent and Emergency Care.

They will report to Professor Tim Briggs, NHS England’s National Director for Clinical Improvement and Elective Recovery and Chair of the GIRFT programme, and will work closely with existing GIRFT clinical and operational leads, contributing their clinical expertise to hands-on projects aimed at enhancing patient care, safety and outcomes.

A key aspect of the role involves leading and motivating a multidisciplinary team, ensuring accountability across all activities, and overseeing the smooth operation and effective progression of the programme.

The focus for the new clinical lead will be on:

  • improving Category 2 ambulance response times
  • enhancing 4-hour emergency department performance
  • reducing 12-hour ED waits
  • shortening length of stay to improve patient flow

Those appointed will also be tasked with leading project teams, ensuring clear accountability, monitoring progress, and maintaining the overall quality and effectiveness of programme implementation.

The role requires a few days’ involvement per month via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with your current employer. It includes site visits to trusts across England (all travel costs covered) and provides an excellent opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of acute providers, making a meaningful impact on patient care.

To express your interest, please send a covering letter explaining your motivation for this role, highlighting your relevant clinical experience and leadership skills. Include why you’re passionate about contributing to this initiative and how your expertise aligns with the programme’s aims.

Clinicians interested in applying should contact england.girftuec@nhs.net by Friday, 4th July 2025.
