Spotlight on… GIRFT tools to support urgent and emergency care

Did you know GIRFT has a growing range of data-driven tools to support urgent and emergency care? These include:

SEDIT: The Summary Emergency Department Indicator Table was created and developed by GIRFT clinicians and analysts as an easy-to-use, online depository of emergency medicine data to support ED teams in their improvement work. The SEDIT offers the most up-to-date data available for each of the 175+ Type 1 EDs in England, enabling clinicians and managers to evaluate their ED’s current demand, capacity, flow and outcomes, to understand why problems are occurring, and to target the root causes.

A-tED/A-tA: Alternatives to ED (A-tED) is a simple scoring system to help systems and trusts measure, rate and compare the accessibility, availability and opening hours of services on offer as alternatives to attending the ED in their area. The scoring process is facilitated by meetings between the local partners and GIRFT colleagues to discuss and agree opportunities for improvement. Together with a sister tool – Alternatives to Admission (A-tA) – they support ICSs to get patients to the best service for their urgent care needs.

Six To Help Fix: This tool outlines six ‘must-dos’ for hospitals, which should be implemented to make the biggest difference to acute medical flows in the short term. Once teams have improved their score, support is on offer to develop medium- and long-term strategies to provide consistent high-quality care, improve flow through the hospital and achieve better outcomes.
