Personal procedure data in the NCIP portal now rolled out to all thoracic surgeons in England

Consultant surgeons carrying out thoracic surgery now have access to their personal procedure data in the National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP) portal.

All thoracic surgeons, as well as Responsible Officers, Medical Directors and specialty clinical leads, can register for access to the 28 dashboards live in the NCIP tool, covering procedures such as thoracoscopic and robotic lobectomy and segmentectomy.

The NCIP portal is a free data platform showing consultant surgeons their own data, enabling them to review their practice to help improve clinical quality and patient safety and to support their appraisal, revalidation and career development. Consultants are shown data covering their entire NHS practice, wherever it is performed, with high-quality, specialty-specific dashboards at patient level.

A phased rollout of NCIP has been under way since October 2023 to eventually grant access to data across all specialties. More than 2,800 consultants across England are now using the portal regularly.

Clinical leads, consultants and data experts work together to create dashboards that are accurate and meaningful for each featured specialty. Once a specialty’s dashboards are live, the data is updated every three months.

NCIP data is accessible via the Model Health System, allowing users to move seamlessly between the portal and MHS.

Join our event to learn more

A launch event is being held on 2nd December 2024, led by NCIP clinical lead for thoracic surgery Doug West. This will be a chance to discuss and demonstrate the portal, and to ask questions. Attendees will find the sessions most helpful if they activate and are actively using their NCIP account in advance – email the team at england.ncip@nhs.net.
