Two more specialties – cardiology and neurology – have been added to GIRFT’s growing suite of toolkits and templates supporting clinicians in primary and secondary care with reducing unnecessary delays for Advice and Guidance requests.
The two new toolkits have been developed by working groups of clinicians from both primary and secondary care, to ensure they are helpful to both the specialists using them and the GPs receiving them.
Each contains templates for responding to some of the most common A&G requests in the specialty, supporting secondary care clinicians to deliver faster responses and enabling primary care colleagues to get faster feedback and provide more streamlined care for their patients.
The templates in each toolkit cover common questions on:
- Cardiology: ischaemic heart disease, heart failure management, rhythm disturbance, hypertension management, postural hypotension with systolic hypertension (POTS) and screening.

- Neurology: essential tremor, migraine, fasciculations, transient loss of consciousness, sensory symptoms, vertigo and dizziness, incidental findings on an MRI brain scan, trigeminal neuralgia and symptoms after head injury.

The toolkits also offer tips on making optimal use of A&G and are colour-coded, allowing an easy-to-understand, personalised response which is tailored to the patient’s presentation, with the most important information clearly highlighted and scope for local processes and requirements flagged.
GIRFT has now developed has A&G toolkits and templates in ten specialties: cardiology, children and young people, dermatology, endocrinology, ENT, gastroenterology, gynaecology, neurology, rheumatology and urology.
They are available to all NHS colleagues on the GIRFT Futures workspace.
