GIRFT 2026 fellows programme showcase
Since October 2022, the GIRFT Clinicals Fellows programme has undertaken a large variety of projects, mainly focusing on clinical improvement work to support the wider GIRFT programme, such as elective recovery, the high-volume low complexity (HVLC) initiative and environmentally sustainable healthcare.
This showcase will give you the opportunity to hear from the 2025/26 cohort of GIRFT fellows as they present their innovative projects.

GIRFT general surgery: Reflections, progress and what comes next
Mark Cheetham, GIRFT clinical lead for general surgery, is hosting this webinar to reflect on what his 2026 follow-up report shows, discuss the progress since the original 2017 national report was published and to set out what comes next.
We are delighted to be joined by Christian Macutkiewicz, president of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), one of the five organisations which endorsed the report.
Join us to hear guest speaker showcasing best practice examples from their trust.

GIRFT community MSK webinar: supporting patients with chronic pain
GIRFT’s clinical leads for cMSK and chronic pain services are hosting a webinar to discuss how community MSK services can best support patients with chronic pain.
Hosted by Lesley Kay, GIRFT joint clinical lead for rheumatology, alongside Helen Makins, GIRFT chronic pain clinical lead and Andrew Bennett, GIRFT cMSK clinical lead, we will hear more about successful community based chronic pain services and share examples of best practice “left shift” models of delivery.

Improving breast surgery pathology turnaround times – what's working well?
GIRFT, in conjunction with the Association of Breast Pathology and the Association of Breast Surgery, is hosting a webinar to share good practice in improving breast surgery pathology turnaround times.
Hosted by Tracey Irvine, GIRFT clinical lead for breast surgery, the session will feature pathology teams from Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who will share examples of good practice in the pathways – from biopsy/operation to results, and how these can help providers to meet the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS).

Safe insulin use in neonatal units
Following the publication of GIRFT’s guidance for the safe use of insulin in neonatology services, this webinar – hosted by Eleri Adams, GIRFT’s clinical lead for neonatology – will discuss the recommendations in the report for safe access, control and storage of insulin in neonatal units and how they can be implemented, as well as recommendations for professional practice.
There will also be an opportunity to learn more, and see a demonstration of, new neonatal insulin e-learning to support safe prescribing, preparation and/or administration of insulin in neonatal units.

GIRFT and BOA webinar: Making best use of updated national pathways for elective orthopaedic surgery
GIRFT programme lead, Professor Tim Briggs, and the President of British Orthopaedic Association, Amar Rangam, are hosting this webinar to discuss how you can make the best use of the recently updated national pathways for elective orthopaedic surgery.
We will be joined by the five specialist societies, who have co-badged the pathways – British Hip Society (BHS), British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK), British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS), British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (BOFAS), Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH). The presentations will highlight the key changes that have been made to update the pathways, together with the supporting evidence.

CYA diabetes national report – reducing variation and improving outcomes
Dr Dita Aswani, GIRFT CYA diabetes clinical advisor and Dr Fulya Mehta, NHS England’s National Clinical Lead for Diabetes in Children and Young People, are hosting this webinar to discuss the findings and recommendations from the recently published CYA diabetes national report.
This webinar will discuss practical steps to help ensure that every child and young adult living with diabetes in England receives high-quality care and support, regardless of where they live. We will present the findings from the national review undertaken across all 42 regional integrated care boards, a joint initiative between the GIRFT programme and the NHS Diabetes Programme.

Improving UEC spinal pain pathways: physiotherapy and ACP-led solutions
GIRFT clinical lead for spinal surgery, Mike Hutton, is hosting this webinar to share best practice from high performing sites who have successfully improved spinal pain pathways in UEC, specifically using physiotherapy and ACP-led solutions.
Our guest speakers will discuss how they have introduced physiotherapy and ACP-led spinal pain pathways in their trusts, such as the SDEC model for patients with spinal pain and the use of Spinal Assessment Service to reduce first outpatient waits and increases surgical conversion. The session will identify practical steps and quick wins for trusts looking to implement similar pathways.

Recognising and managing HLH: what’s changed in the updated GIRFT pathway?
GIRFT has updated the consensus pathway and supporting guidance for the diagnosis, treatment, management and governance of the rare condition, haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Dr Peter Lanyon, GIRFT joint clinical lead for rheumatology, is hosting this webinar to discuss why the pathway matters and what has changed in the updated version.
We will be joined by rheumatologists Dr Rachel Tattersall (Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Sheffield Children’s Hospital) and Dr Jessica Manson (University College London Hospitals), who have updated the pathway and we will learn what has changed and how adopting the pathway can make a difference to patients.
