The British Journal of Healthcare Management has published a paper exploring two approaches to the delivery of paediatric elective care through a surgical hub model.
The report discusses key considerations for paediatric elective care drawing on insights from two NHS centres in Greater Manchester providing children’s surgery.
GIRFT, which runs an accreditation scheme to assess clinical and operational standards at NHS surgical hubs, has issued guidance for trusts to improve paediatric care including the use of dedicated paediatric operating days and surgical hubs.
The BJHM report highlights the paediatric provision at:
- The Wythenshawe Hospital which has created a ring-fenced hub facility, known as the Starlight Theatre, to provide elective paediatric surgery across various specialties.
- Chorley and South Ribble Hospital which has converted five theatres of its adult surgical hub for dedicated use of paediatric surgery for one day, once per fortnight.
