The GIRFT programme is seeking a national lower gastrointestinal (LGI) clinical lead to review surgical performance, with a focus on colorectal cancer. This includes assessing specialist practice, identifying providers of complex procedures and evaluating service distribution. Key priorities include ensuring appropriate surgical volumes, preventing low-volume activity, and reviewing stoma reversal rates to support best practice.
Using a data-driven, evidence-based approach, the clinical lead will benchmark performance, address unwarranted variation, and support trusts with challenged colorectal services. They will oversee data collection, analysis, and peer reviews, working closely with the analytics team to develop metrics.
Colorectal cancer, commonly known as bowel cancer, is one of the most prevalent cancers in the UK, with around 44,100 new cases diagnosed each year—approximately 120 cases per day. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with age and over 43% of cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 75.
The role will involve working collaboratively with relevant stakeholders including, amongst others, the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, Cancer Alliances and the NHSE Cancer Programme, NHSE policy and commissioning teams, ICBs, providers and other GIRFT national clinical leads.
The appointment is offered via a memorandum of understanding agreement of 12 months with your host trust at 0.2 WTE, with the potential to extend at the annual review. For further information, please contact c.ager@nhs.net
