GIRFT celebrates Edward Nickell as he receives BAUS Certificate of Distinction

GIRFT is proud to congratulate Edward Nickell on receiving a British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Certificate of Distinction, recognising his outstanding contribution to urology services and clinical improvement.

Edward has been a central member of the GIRFT urology workstream since 2017, supporting national clinical leads and working closely with colleagues across BAUS and the British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN). During this time, he has played a key role in developing over 20 clinically led best practice guides and pathways spanning the urology pathway.

Working in partnership with clinicians, Edward has helped bring together expert groups to build consensus on practical, evidence-based improvements. This has resulted in guidance covering areas including outpatient transformation, urgent and emergency care, same day emergency care, catheter management, urological investigation units, cancer pathways, and greener practice.

His contribution has supported urology to become a leading example of the GIRFT model in action, demonstrating how clinically led collaboration can drive meaningful improvements for both services and patients.

Edward said:

"I am grateful for the generosity of urologists with their time, expertise and enthusiasm, which has made urology a trailblazer and helped other specialties to follow the GIRFT model of clinically led best practice. It has been a privilege to support urologists in making this impact for patients."

Beyond urology, Edward has also contributed to wider national work, including supporting the development of the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance and major NHS policy programmes such as the Carter Review and the NHS Long Term Plan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he also worked in frontline family liaison and bereavement support roles.

Edward’s dedication, partnership working and commitment to improvement have had a lasting impact across the programme.

We are delighted to see his work recognised by BAUS.
