Download our new best practice ENT pathways for patients with throat symptoms

Best practice pathways to support the care of patients presenting with a range of throat symptoms are now on offer from the GIRFT team.

A new pathway for non-specific throat symptoms has been developed by GIRFT’s clinical leads for ENT, alongside a specific pathway for high dysphagia (the sensation of food sticking in the throat, neck or upper part of the chest).

The pathway for non-specific symptoms takes the user from triage and assessment through to discharge and follow-up, highlighting red flags for suspected cancer and strategies for the management of various symptoms.

Non-specific throat symptoms can include:

  • A persistent sore or scratchy throat
  • A feeling of a lump in the throat (often called “globus sensation”)
  • Frequent throat clearing
  • Mild discomfort when swallowing
  • Hoarseness or voice changes
  • A dry or irritated throat
  • A feeling of tightness in the throat

(NB: these are assuming no accompanying red flag symptoms)

The pathway for high dysphagia outlines best practice for clinical assessment, including examinations and onward referrals, and includes advice for management and treatment.

Both pathways are co-badged by the British Laryngological Association.
